God has never changed, there are a countless number of scriptures both praising and revealing God’s unchanging nature – He has always been the same.
17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17, NIV
There is also a countless number of scriptures describing Jesus as having been there since the beginning of time with God. He’s unveiling to the world, what we all know as revelation, is revealed throughout the new covenant texts, but He has always been in existence since the beginning.
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8, NIV
Everything right now revolves around JESUS CHRIST: Time, our calendars and even how we schedule our weeks, months and years are all geared around Christ. HE HAS NOW BEEN REVEALED TO THIS WORLD AND THE BEST THING WE CAN DO IS YES MAKE A DECISION TO FOLLOW HIM, BUT FIRST IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW HIM. Can you really follow someone you don’t know?
How then do we as humans understand and get to handle to OLD AND NEW COVENANTS?
There has forever been a debate because of this covenants, some discussions have gotten way out of hand resulting in separation. Cohorts have risen and still keep arising all dependent on which side one perceives is correct, and sides have been taken.
Notice I used the word perceived, this is because no one on this earth has the power to make up anyone’s mind. People can influence you with knowledge, but no one can make up your mind. We all make our own decisions which are either driven by faith or fear. Depending on what you know, it is either building you in faith or fear. The knowledge of God will build your faith but the knowledge that is in this world will cause you to fear from ever drawing near to God. What you know can building faith or igniting fear. Fear is directly inclined to manipulation while faith is based on truth.
To understand this covenants’, let us take the example of a child, shall we? When a child is born, before they can make any decision or come to terms with their parents on anything, they are under a covenant. Not a covenant that they have agreed to since they cannot reason out with their minds, thus they cannot make any decisions. This child is therefore under law, they are under constant surveillance to ensure that they can mature to the level decision making. Once they are mature and can make a sound judgement on issues, they now can agree to live with everybody on this earth. They can agree to keep living with their parents and will one day leave the father’s house to now start their own, this is life.
In this same manner is how we ought to look at this covenant, at a time when we could not make our own decisions to be in God, since we were immature and without any understanding, as a good Father, God had to put us under law. But once we began to understand, once we were mature, we would then have to come to an agreement to live life just as God has been living, we then would have to be under a new agreement with God, this new covenant, which we have to agree to.
Notice I have intentionally aligned maturity with understanding and not age. To be able to understand and make sound judgements about life is being mature. Our immaturity was due to sin, sin was what was causing us to be immature and deficit in understanding. It is for this reason why people give their lives to Jesus Christ at different times and seasons, this is because they have come to the understanding that they are sinners who need to be saved from this sin. Some realize this at a tender age, while others at a much later stage in life.
These covenants weren’t for God. God doesn’t need a covenant to be God. We are ones who have been given a covenant. The covenant is ours, We are the one in need of it. it is important to learn and know God, understand the different covenants, more especially the one we are in, The New Covenant, and make a decision to be in God. But let us not be caught up in the battle of covenants that we miss out to know and reach out to God, He has always been the same; God of the Old and New Covenant.
